Sports Lighting Glossary: Key Terms, Standards, and Acronyms

A reference glossary for facility designers, athletic directors, parks departments, and procurement teams navigating LED sports lighting specifications and standards. Covers the most common terms, abbreviations, and standards references encountered in sports lighting bid specifications and engineering documentation.

Photometric Terms

Term

Definition

Foot-candle   (fc)

Unit of illuminance: lumens per square foot. Sports   lighting horizontal target measured at ground level.

Lux

SI unit of illuminance: lumens per square meter. 1   fc = 10.764 lux.

Lumen

Unit of luminous flux. Total light output from a   fixture.

Candela   (cd)

Unit of luminous intensity. Light output in a   specific direction.

Luminance

Light reflected from or emitted by a surface   (cd/m²). Measured for glare calculations.

Vertical   Illuminance

Foot-candle measured on a vertical plane (typically   at player eye height).

Uniformity   Ratio (Max:Min, Avg:Min)

Brightness gradient across the playing surface.

EPA

Effective Projected Area: the wind-load-relevant   surface area of a fixture.

Glare and Optical Terms

Term

Definition

GR   (Glare Rating)

ANSI/IES glare index for sports lighting. Lower is   better.

UGR   (Unified Glare Rating)

CIE international glare index, used in   FIFA/FIBA/World Athletics.

BUG   Rating (B/U/G)

IES TM-15 rating: Backlight / Uplight / Glare. U=0   is full cut-off.

Full   Cut-Off

Optical geometry emitting zero light at or above   90° from nadir. BUG U=0.

Indirect   Asymmetric

Optical strategy redirecting light across the   playing surface rather than projecting it downward.

Beam   Distribution

Angular pattern of fixture light output. Narrow /   medium / wide.

Color Rendering Terms

Term

Definition

CRI (Ra)

Color Rendering Index. 0–100 scale; higher better.   CRI ≥ 80 standard sports.

R9

Red rendering specifically. ≥ 50 NCAA broadcast; ≥   80 FBS / pro broadcast.

TLCI

Television Lighting Consistency Index.   Camera-specific rendering.

TM-30   (Rf, Rg)

IES TM-30 modern color rendering: fidelity (Rf) and   gamut (Rg).

CCT

Correlated Color Temperature. 5000K–5700K standard   for sports.

MacAdam   Step

CCT consistency unit. Step 3 = broadcast tier; Step   5 = recreational acceptable.

Driver and Lifetime Terms

Term

Definition

L70

Hours of operation at which fixture maintains 70%   of initial lumen output.

MTTF

Mean Time To Failure. Driver lifetime metric.

Flicker   Percentage

LED brightness variation at line frequency. <   0.3% broadcast tier.

Flicker   Frequency

LED on-off cycle frequency. > 5,000 Hz   broadcast; > 25,000 Hz slow-mo.

TLM-30

IES temporal light modulation measurement standard.

THD

Total Harmonic Distortion. IEEE 519 limit < 20%   standard.
